Recipe - Tofu & Bean Sprout Stir-Fry
I love it whenever my mom makes this stuff so I tried to emulate it one day to a pretty close fit. It wasn't exactly the same but it sure was tasty. Next time I'll watch her when she makes it but for now, I'll stick with this concoction I created. This is a great vegetarian side dish to have with rice. It's full of fresh flavor and yet retains some umami taste from the sesame seed oil and soy sauce. Give it a whirl! It doesn't involve very many ingredients.
Step 1: Ingredients (serving size: 4)
- vegetable oil, for pan
- black pepper, to taste
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp sesame seed oil
- 2 tsps soy sauce
- 4 oz garlic/Chinese chives, quartered
- 8 oz bean sprouts
- 16 oz firm tofu, cubed
Step 2: Prepping the tofu & vegetables
Open up your tofu package and drain. Then press down on the tofu to drain off excess water before cubing it. Heat up a skillet and add your vegetable oil when it gets hot. Add your tofu and fried lightly until a golden color, adding the salt slowly as you stir. While this is going on, you should wash your vegetables and slice the chives accordingly.
Step 3: Adding the ingredients & finishing
Once your tofu is a nice golden color, you can start adding in your bean sprouts and chives. Since these are light vegetables, they don't need to be in the pan all too long. Add the rest of your ingredients (black pepper, garlic powder, sesame seed oil, and soy sauce), and stir. You will know when it is done once the bean sprouts have become a nice translucent color but haven't become soggy. Enjoy!
